The sun shines down brightly on two young campers, walking side by side, towards the dining room. They just met on the bus and are ready for the first day of camp. Today is the first day of their new Jewish life. Today they start building the friendships that will last their lifetimes. Today, as they come together once again, not just as scholars or students, but as a people, they begin to find their place and develop their Jewish identity.
Summer camp is a staple in the journey of engagement in Jewish community. Standing together with hundreds of other Jewish children, proudly chanting the words of tefillah and singing the songs sung by generations of Jewish campers, connects these young, new members of our community with those that have come before, and those that will come after. The relationships built during those special, dreamy weeks of summer in wood cabins and on overnight trips, around campfires and during lessons, will remain and be part of their community forever, ingrained in their identity. These are the friends they will visit on holiday, invite to their weddings, and introduce to their children
In summer 2022, thanks to Minneapolis Jewish Federation needs-based camp scholarships, 366 Jewish children were able to go on their journey of Jewish identity together with their peers.
Needs-based scholarships directly help the camper and family, ensuring that no financial burden stands in the way of their child being able to access one of the most beautiful and memorable formative Jewish experiences. MJF helps Jewish children love their future in the Jewish community.
