To quote one J-Pride participant, “there is no feeling as freeing as being yourself.” This is the feeling J-Pride provides to members of the LGBTQ+ community. J-Pride is a program of the Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis, supported by Minneapolis Jewish Federation, that facilitates community gatherings, bringing together LGBTQ+ Jewish folks and their allies for events, social gatherings, and educational opportunities.
Whether you’re a born and bred Minnesotan or a welcome new transplant, J-Pride has helped many members of our Jewish community find a place to call their own. With the help of MJF funding this past year, J-Pride has been able to increase their offerings and reach even more members of the community with over 40 program offerings, including coffee socials, an over-40 meetup, social nights, zine-making workshops, havdalah kits, Shabbat picnics, and a new Queer Mussar pilot.
The Queer Mussar pilot offers an opportunity for queer-focused and queer-led learning that delves into a framework for cultivating middot (values or characteristics) in order to live ethically. Middot range from traits like gratitude and compassion, to trust and anger.
While not all J-Pride gatherings focus specifically on Jewish topics, conversations regularly tend to tie back to Judaism, and recognition of similar values. J-Pride participants have expressed gratitude and excitement to have spaces that feel more applicable to their lives and interests. The incredible work of J-Pride helps our community actualize a reality of inclusion and recognition, giving all Jews access to opportunities to connect with their Jewish community.
