Today, you are a philanthropist.
Mazel tov on your bar or bat mitzvah! Now is the perfect time to make the world a better place. Not sure how? We can help you start with the Genesis Mitzvah Fund – or GMF for short.
People love to donate money to charity in honor of your big accomplishments. With a GMF, your friends and family can give money directly to a fund that you and your parents set up. Then, you can choose where to donate the money!
“It’s amazing to be able to make a difference while I’m 14.” –Talia G, 2008 bat mitzvah
Support your Jewish community through the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, fight for animal rights, donate to your favorite camp, or help cure a disease – the options are endless. One thing is for sure though: with a GMF you’ll be someone’s hero.
Plus, we’ll show you how places around Minneapolis help our Jewish community and Jewish communities around the world so you can be a tzedakah expert. And you won’t do it alone! You’ll meet other teens who, like you, love being Jewish.
So, what do you think? Ready to change the world? Grab mom or dad and let’s get started!

We know, we know: just yesterday your teen was a baby. Sunrise, sunset and all that jazz. We’ve been there, and there’s no doubt about it: it’s bittersweet.
If your baby has to grow up, why not make sure they have a solid understanding of tzedakah – why not help them set up a Genesis Mitzvah Fund?
“It felt really great in 2008 when I could personally respond to an emergency request to support people in our community that were suffering after the economic downturn.” – Ben K, 2005 Bar Mitzvah
How to set up a Genesis Mitzvah Fund
There are several ways to set up a fund:
- Family members can set up the fund with an initial gift.
- Bar/Bat Mitzvah guests are invited to make a direct contribution to the fund
- The young person can set up the fund after his/her Bar or Bat Mitzvah using gifts received.
Additionally, contributions may be made anytime as gifts to honor birthdays, confirmation, graduation, or other special accomplishments.
Donations can also be made to the fund as a tribute to other special people or events.
How to manage a Genesis Mitzvah Fund
Once the fund reaches $1,000, it will start earning interest. Your child can then make annual donations from the investment income – donations to anything they want!
Teens have made contributions to everything from their favorite camp, organizations that fight for animal rights, human rights, disease – and of course those in our own Minneapolis Jewish Community…The options are virtually endless.
The assets in Genesis Mitzvah Funds are professionally invested and managed with other funds at the Jewish Community Foundation. Statements are sent out on a quarterly basis.
